Year 5

Fabulous Finish
On Wednesday 16th July 2014, Year Five had their fabulous finish. They became The Beatles for the afternoon and composed their own version of the famous hit 'Yellow Submarine.' All the children then performed their versions on the stage in the hall. It was fantastic! Well done Year Five.
Please see the attached pictures below.

Trip to the Gurdwara
On Monday 23rd June. Year Five visited the Gurdwara in Stafford. Their behaviour was brilliant and they listened well and asked enquiring questions.
Please see the attached pictures below.

Survival Boxes - Half Term Homework
Year Five have created some brilliant and outstanding survival boxes. I am very impressed! Please see the pictures below. I have a very creative and reflective class.

Shakespeare Workshop - 6th May 2014
Year 5 had a fantastic day creating art images for the Shakespeare play 'As you Like it.' They worked in four teams and were given an act from the play to reproduce using ripped paper and marker pens. The end result was brilliant and very creative.
Please see the attached pictures below.

Topic Launch Afternoon - Hairspray
Year 5 had a very creative and thoughtful afternoon on Wednesday 28th April. They watched different dances from the musical Hairspray focusing on the segregation at that time in America. (This linked with their learning about South Africa and the system of apartheid in the context of their new class text, Journey to Jo'burg.)
Year 5 worked in groups of their choice and created an equality dance using the song 'You can't stop the beat.' Their creativity, cooperation, understanding and stamina impressed both myself, Mrs Hier- Daly and other members of staff who came to watch.
Please see the attached pictures below.

April 2014
I hope that you have had a good Easter break and that you are feeling ready for the Summer term. Last term was extremely rewarding and all children made progress in different areas of learning. A highlight for me was the trip down the working mine and the behaviour of the children was fantastic. Once again thank you for your support with everything that your child has done so far in Year five.

I have attached below the Summer Curriculum letter so that you can see what the children will be learning about. Our launch afternoon is next Wednesday 30th April. Please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school for that day. All the information about the launch is explained in the curriculum letter.

The taster sessions at Sir Graham Balfour High School begin again on Wednesday 30th April with Humanities. The maths lesson was a great success and the children who went spoke with enthusiasm about their experiences.

To help your child with their transition into Year Six, there will be Literacy and Numeracy homework given out every Friday for this term. It will be expected in on the Monday like the Spring term.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation with all of the above.

Taster Sessions at Sir Graham Balfour High School
On Wednesday the 26th March 2014, the children were given a timetable of when their taster sessions are at Sir Graham Balfour. I have also attached the word document below. The response has been fantastic and 26 children are going. If you would still like your child to attend there is time. Just fill in the letter that you were given at parents evening and bring it in to me.

World Book Day 6th March 2014
The children really enjoyed World Book Day yesterday. Their costumes were fantastic and the way in which they rose to each challenge was a pleasure to see. They enjoyed creating their library card design and decorating the door. They showed great team spirit in decorating the door. Please come in and see! I have attached some pictures below of the day.

End of January 2014
As part of our topic 'A Victorian Child' year 5 had a launch afternoon where they experienced what it was like to be taught in a Victorian classroom. They had arithmetic and handwriting and had their fingers checked to see if they were clean! I think they were glad when the experience was over!
On Monday 27th January, they went down a working mine and also visited the museum. They were a credit to themselves and enjoyed the day. Please see the pictures below of the trip. Thank you again for your continued support and thank you to the parents who came on the trip.

January 2014
I hope that you have had a Happy Christmas and I wish you a Happy New Year! I have attached the Spring Curriculum letter below so that you can see what the children will be learning about. I am very excited in particular about the new topic called 'A Victorian Child!' Please read about the launch afternoon and the class trip!

December 2013
At the end of this term, the children enjoyed watching extracts of the film Titanic to celebrate the end of the topic Journeys. They have worked incredibly hard and this was seen with the knowledge that they were able to recall about pirates and the voyage of the Titanic when they reflected on the topic.
The children have had a fantastic first term with lots of experiences that they will remember, namely Kingswood. They have been motivated to learn and have been a pleasure to teach. This has also been reflected in the homework that I have received.
I will attach a Spring Curriculum letter before the start of the Spring term so that you can see what the children will be learning about.
On behalf of myself and Mrs Hier-Daly, have a fantastic Christmas and once again thank you for your continued support.

November 2013
Kingswood was an amazing experience for all the children that went. If you haven't already, please look at the pictures below. Thank you if you have brought some photos in for the class to see. The children are still talking about their experiences and have written some instructions, a recount and a leaflet based on the different activities. We have a display just outside the classroom.

On Monday 25th November, the children will be creating Jamaican musical instruments. They brought home a list of their equipment on Friday with a picture of their design. We are looking forward to this and will attach photographs later on this week.....

Once again, thank you again with your continued support.

29/11/13 - See below the photographs from making the Jamaican instruments. Very successful!

We have had a busy half term with lots of learning that has taken place. Below I have attached some photographs showing you some of the activities that Year Five have been involved with; Pirate day, making a string telephone for Science and performing their Drunken Sailor lyrics for Music and Topic.
Thank you once again with your support. I am looking forward to Kingswood!

See below the pictures of Kingswood. (8th November 2013)

Welcome to Year 5!
Dear Parents,

Welcome to Year Five. I am really looking forward to working with you over this next academic year. Below I have attached my welcome letter with the Autumn Term Curriculum Information. This tells you what the children will be learning as well as all about the expectations with homework.

Please take note that on Friday the 6th September we are having a launch day to introduce the new topic. In light of this, please can you ensure that your child is dressed in a pirate costume just for that day. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

During the school year, I shall be attaching your children's work and any photographs as well as any important information. Once again, I am looking forward to working with you and if you wish to come and see me, my door is always open.
