Year 6

REMINDER THAT YEAR SIX REVISION CLASSES START ON THURSDAY 2ND MARCH AT 8:15AM AND WILL TAKE PLACE EACH THURSDAY AND FRIDAY UP TO TEST WEEK!
Welcome to Autumn Term 2016

Dear Parent/Carer

Welcome to Year 6.  I am really excited about working with you and your child over this next school year. I am particularly looking forward to our visit to Laches Wood Outdoor Education Centre (Monday 10th October – Friday 14th October 2016). At Laches Wood your child will learn new skills and develop teamwork. This experience will give your child so much confidence to help them face the challenges of Year 6. This outdoor educational trip really will positively impact on your child - please ensure that any outstanding money, along with the consent form is in school by Friday 7th October at the very latest. You will also be required to complete a medical form for your child which will be sent out to you approximately one week before the visit.

I know that this year will present exciting opportunities to watch your child develop in a productive and caring learning environment. I, Miss Padgham and the children will constantly refer to the school motto, ‘Care to learn and learn to care.

There is no doubt that Year 6 will be challenging and hard work. It is important that your child embraces the journey that will take them on to High School next September. I will be with them every step of the way to ensure that they are fully prepared for this important stage in their lives.

I am particularly excited about our Autumn Term Topic ‘I’m a Survivor’! On our ‘Launch Day’ we will be working in teams to set up a survival camp area. We will engage in a parent project part way through the term - working with you and your child – more details to follow in due course. Our ‘Fabulous Finish’ will be a survival day (in school) where the children will be taught (by qualified staff members) how to safely build camp fires and successfully construct shelters. We will cover a huge range of skills during our learning through this topic – of which a brief overview is given below.

During their time in Year 6, every child will be expected to take on additional roles and responsibilities around the school. The children wrote letters of application for their preferred roles during their transition days with me. They will have been informed of their roles at the beginning of term. With regard to the end of KS2 Government Tests, you and your child will be invited to a meeting after Christmas when Mr Compton and I will discuss these with you in more detail. Whole class revision classes will begin after Christmas and these too will be discussed at this meeting. For your child to be successful in Year 6, all children will be given homework. On a Thursday they will all have one piece of Literacy homework and one piece of Numeracy homework. Both of these need to completed and returned to school by the following Monday. All children will also be expected to read and practise set spellings every night. I have included below the books which my previous Year Six class have recommended for your child this year! I have already talked to your child about the expected standard of presentation and it is imperative that all homework is completed at this required standard – parents, your support in this is very much appreciated.

As always I will reward children for displaying good attitudes to learning as well as to each other.  Learning works best when it is a partnership between the school, the parents and the pupils.

If you look in 'Curriculum Information' below (in Autumn Term)  you will find a broad overview of our areas of learning during this first term.

Thank you in anticipation of your support this year - I am very much looking forward to working with you and your child.

Mrs Farmer
