Today in Nursery we will be focussing on establishing a secure pencil grip. We are encouraging parents to watch the link on the website that shows Mrs Lunn displaying how to get your child sitting in a suitable position ready to learn how to hold a pencil securely to begin to write your name.
Another excellent way of how to establish your child's secure pencil grip if by using tools such as playdough. By your child exploring the playdough they are developing those key muscles needed to help in the early stages of writing.
Attached on to our website is a recipe for making playdough as well as a You tube programme we use within Nursery called Dough Gym. These programmes are excellent with helping your child develop those important muscles.
Here are some development points to consider depending on your child's age and stage of development:
22-36 months Beginning to use three fingers (tripod grip) to hold writing tools
30-50 months Hold pencil near point between front two fingers and thumb with good control
40-60 months Shows a preference for a dominant hand
