Monday 2nd November
Today, we will be looking at the composition of the numbers 1,2 and 3. All you need is a box and 3 balls or small objects. Place the box in the middle of the room and ask your child to throw the small objects/balls into the box. Ask them to count how many landed in the box and how many landed outside the box. E.g 1 landed outside the box and 2 landed in the box. 1 +2=3
Continue this process to see how many combinations your child can get and try the process with 2 objects.
Extension- can they write the number sentence down - 1+2=3
This sheet does not need to be printed
On a piece of paper draw a five frame which is shown on the sheet. Ask your child to pick 2 colours and ask them to draw dots in the five frame to represent different combinations of how to make the numbers 1, 2 and 3. Please see the example below to guide your child.
Extension- Can they write the number sentence- 2+1=3
Can they fill in the blanks ____+1=3 or 3=____+2
Wednesday 4th November
Today I would like your child to use these numicon pieces and find as many ways as they can to make the numbers 1,2 and 3.
E.g the numicon pieces 1 and 2 make the number 3. Your child could then try and write a number sentence 1+2=3 or 2+1=3
