Wednesday 1st July

Today we are looking at partitioning a number up to 6. Choose a number from 2 to 6 and the children have to get that many spots. Next share the spots between both sides of the ladybird. How many different ways can you separate that number? Then ask the child how many spots are on the ladybird. They need to try and remember that the total is still the same and that nothing was added or taken away. This activity is important as it helps the children understand something called number conservation., where the total does not change as long as you don't add or take away, it just looks different.

6 is always 6 whether it is:

6

6 and 0

5 and 1

4 and 2

3 and 3

1 and 2 and 3

4 and 1 and 1 and many more ways
