At Nursery today we are playing shops. We are encouraging the children to use their counting skills to count pretend money as they buy something. Please do not worry about using real money or teaching your children what coins are worth- that will come later. For this it is really just a game of knowing that 'money' pays for things. You could pay with buttons, pretend little pieces of paper for money, Lego Bricks etc.
You could make a shop using teddies, toys, tins of food, fruit and vegetables or make some playdough cookies.
Here are some developmental steps for you to use as a rough guide depending on your child's age in months:
22-36 months : beginning to make believe by pretending. recites some number names in sequence. Selects a small amount of objects from a group for example "please give me 2" "please give me 1".
30-50 months : Uses number names accurately in play.
40-60 months Begins to use every day language related to money ( buy, cost, change, card, enough, bank)
