Year 2

Welcome to Year 2!

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome back, we hope you had a lovely summer and enjoyed the wonderful weather. Miss Mitchell, Mrs Barton and myself are really looking forward to working with you and your children during this next school year. During this year we will be based in one of the two new classrooms which overlook the gazebo. I have had a busy few weeks moving over and setting up the area which I hope the children will like as much as I do.  Look out for our class display in the corridor outside our classroom!

We were lucky enough to work with the children during two transition days last term.On theses days we focused on PSHE activities including creating our class charter. During the coming year myself, Mrs Barton and Miss Mitchell along with the children will constantly refer to both our class charter and the school motto, ‘Care to learn and learn to care’ as we strive to achieve our targets. The school values will also be key to our learning and during the autumn term our focus will be on staying safe.

Year 2 is an important year as it is the last year of key stage 1. This means that during the summer term the children will sit their SATs.  This is a particularly important year as we will be the first year to sit the new SATs assessments. I believe passionately about learning and will ensure that the children’s progress and achievements of year 1 are built on and that the classroom ethos reflects the school motto of ‘Care to learn and learn to care'.

Learning is a partnership between all parties; children, families and school and is at its most effective when we work together towards common goals. There will be a parents meeting to find out about the expectations and routines in year 2 and I hope to meet as many parents as possible during the evening.

During their time in Year 2, every child will be expected to read their school reading book daily (which you then sign and make comments).  Each week the children will then move along a class ‘Reading Race Track’ depending on how many times they read. In addition  a homework task will be set on a Friday and Spellings will be given out on a Monday and practised using the Look, Cover, write, Check method.  Throughout the year the children will keep a journal about their learning.

Each Friday our 2 class mascots (Barnaby Bear and Martha Maths Monkey) will go home with two children for special adventures. Barnaby enjoys reading and writing adventures where as Martha loves mathematical adventures! Keep looking out for the blue bags in the future!

As always we will reward children for displaying good attitudes to learning as well as to each other (an important part of the class charter!). There will also be a weekly celebration assembly and parents of children chosen as the star of the week or for the writing award, will be invited to attend and stay for refreshments afterwards.

We are continuing to promote more independence in Year 2 by giving the children responsibility for their book bags e.g. handing in letters, homework or snack money. We encourage the children to change their reading books as and when it is necessary; sometimes it can be as often as every day. The children are responsible for choosing a book from the correct book band which will be reviewed on a regular basis.

During the term the children will work towards achieving their individual Literacy and Numeracy targets which will be discussed during the parent consultation evening.

During the second week  we will be launching our new topic ‘Let there be Light'. I have attached a copy of our termly curriculum newsletter in the  Autumn Term pages below.
